Traditional Christmas tale comes to life in Laiki Yitonia
With Christmas just around the corner, it is time for the island’s neighbourhoods to fill with twinkly lights, festive décor, seasonal cheer and lots and lots of activities for all. One neighbourhood in Nicosia is getting ready to transform into a Christmas Village once again. The Municipality of Nicosia is organising the Christmas Village in Laiki Yitonia for the second year, turning its cobblestone streets into a traditional Christmas tale from November 23 to January 6.
“In this enchanting neighbourhood,” says the municipality, “within Nicosia’s historic walls, visitors of all ages can step into a traditional Christmas story. The experience offers relaxation, education and creative entertainment infused with elements of Nicosia’s history and traditions. With the slogan ‘a traditional Christmas tale’, the Laiki Yitonia Christmas Village invites everyone to enjoy a unique holiday experience.”
For 50 days, visitors will be able to explore the quaint alleys of Laiki Yitonia and enjoy them in a new light as a series of musical and theatrical performances, choirs, dance ensembles, bands, puppet shows, children’s activities, experiential workshops focused on Cypriot traditions and culinary demonstrations will be presented. Santa’s Workshop will be among the highlights, of course, getting old and young into the Christmas spirit. Best of all, the events, performances and workshops will be free.
And that is not all. Throughout Laiki Yitonia, the neighbourhood’s shops and other vendors will be open selling their goodies and adding to the Christmas spirit of the season.
“Colourful lights, decorations, and Christmas trees will complete the festive atmosphere in the capital’s Christmas Village,” adds the municipality. “Excitement builds as the opening day approaches when this unique village will welcome both locals and visitors with holiday delights, festive colours and aromas, activities for all ages and daily surprises. Of course, Santa and his elves will be there to receive children’s letters with their holiday wishes.”
From participating in hands-on workshops, dressed in Cypriot tradition and customs, to tasting the island’s delights such as local wine, Commandaria, zivania distillation, Cypriot delicacies, baked goods, sweets and street food, this Christmas season in Nicosia will have a local feel. Cypriot goods, crafts and tastes will take centre stage at the Laiki Yitonia Christmas Village.
Although the full programme of events and hours of operation is yet to be announced, the municipality says it is coming soon. Until then, mark November 23 as the opening of the Christmas Village season.
