German denies usurpation charges, in custody till December hearing

A German real estate agent, charged with the usurpation of Greek Cypriot property in the north, on Thursday denied any involvement in all 44 charges she is facing.

The German woman is facing charges of advertising, promoting, selling, holding and using property in four different areas of Ayios Ambrosios and Kyrenia and for obtaining €169,000 from fraudulent acts, as well as purchasing an apartment for herself in one of the two areas without the consent of the legal proprietor.

The Nicosia criminal court dismissed all pretrial objections raised by the defence and set a new hearing for December 18, until when the accused will remain in custody.

The defence said the accused was willing to raise her bail to €300,000 plus a personal guarantee of €50,000, however the court dismissed the request.

Defence lawyer Sotiris Argyrou raised a question of fair trial, citing his client’s name having leaked to the press along with a testimony that had not yet been presented in court. He also requested an interpreter for his client.

Criminal court judge Nikolas Georgiades said the central prisons were responsible for the defendant and thus the defence should take its requests there.

The three judges of the criminal court were unanimous in their decision for the defendant to remain in custody till December.
