Polis beach bar demolished after turtles endangered

A beach bar on a protected environmental site was demolished early on Saturday morning, after turtle nests were endangered by the rampant pollution.

The bar was on Chrysochou Bay in Paphos, within the Natura 2000 protected area of Polis-Yialia.
According to Philenews which broke the story, the bar had been constructed illegally and had no approval from the environment department, or a building permit.

Local authorities are required to issue a final warning before demolition, calling on the owner to close the premises down.

Ostensibly no action was taken, and a team from the Paphos district office went to demolish the setup on Saturday morning.

The Caretta caretta turtles and Chelonia mydas nest in the environmentally protected area, however the pollution endangers the turtles.

Earlier this year, local authorities in Larnaca demolished two beach bars operating illegally, using generators to keep their business going.
