WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President-elect Donald Trump is building out his administration with picks receiving an array of reaction.
President-elect Trump’s Health and Human Services Secretary nominee is raising eyebrows among both parties and health experts, while other picks have been less controversial.
“Are these the best individuals available?” asked House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
That’s the question Democrats and Republicans in Congress are asking after President-elect Trump announced more nominations for his next administration.
Trump nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr, an anti-vaccine activist, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
He would oversee everything from drug, vaccine and food safety to Medicare, Medicaid and medical research.
“I guess if you like health and if you like people that live a long time, it’s the most important position,” said Trump.
Trump also nominated North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum to serve as his Interior Secretary. The wealthy businessman has close ties to energy industry CEOs.
“We’re going to do things with energy and with land, interior, that is going to be incredible,” said Trump.
The Senate will ultimately have to approve both positions.
New York Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis says every nominee deserves consideration.
“They’re gonna have some scrutiny throughout the process and rightfully so. I think we need to make sure we have the best people in these positions,” said Malliotakis.
Texas Congressman Troy Nehls says since Trump delivered the House and Senate, lawmakers should fall in line.
“Both chambers owe it all to Donald J. Trump. So, let’s just go out there and accomplish his goals and objectives, whatever they are,” said Nehls.
Another less controversial pick is former Georgia Congressman Doug Collins for Veterans Affairs.
