The Detroit Red Wings placed goaltender Ville Husso on NHL waivers Sunday, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

The NHL’s other 31 teams have a chance to claim the 29-year-old Husso off waivers. Otherwise, Husso will become eligible for the Red Wings to assign to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins at 2 p.m. ET on Monday.

Husso played in Detroit’s season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins, allowing four goals on 14 shots and getting pulled after 25 minutes for Cam Talbot. Talbot then recorded a 42-save shutout against the Nashville Predators on Saturday.

The Red Wings had three goalies on their NHL roster, with Alex Lyon being the third. He hasn’t played in the regular season yet but backed up Talbot against Nashville.

As The Hockey News’ Sam Stockton mentioned on the Red Wings site, coach Derek Lalonde said defenseman Jeff Petry and right winger Christian Fischer are unavailable for Monday’s game against the New York Rangers. Since they’re not expected to go on the injured reserve, the team had to free a roster spot if they want 12 forwards on Monday. Seventh defenseman Justin Holl could’ve cleared waivers last week, but he’s a right shot to fill in for Petry, so Detroit will hope Husso’s $4.75-million cap hit scares away any club from claiming him.

Husso was the Red Wings’ starting goalie in 2022-23, playing 56 games and recording a 26-22-7 record, a 3.11 goals-against average and .896 save percentage. Last season, Husso dealt with multiple injuries, which limited him to 19 games. He had a 9-5-2 mark, a 3.55 GAA and .892 SP.

While Husso could still end up being Detroit’s No. 1 goalie this season, Talbot outperforming him so far and Lyon only carrying a $900,000 cap hit made Husso the odd man out as the team deals with short-term injuries. It’s expected he’ll be back in the NHL before long.

The Montreal Canadiens also announced they placed Alex Barre-Boulet on waivers. The 27-year-old played in the team’s first two games, averaging about 10 minutes of ice time and recording a minus-2 rating.
