Penguins Make First Move, Trading Eller To Capitals

After a 7-1 blowout loss to the Dallas Stars on Monday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins made the first of what could be season-changing moves on Tuesday afternoon by trading Lars Eller to the Washington Capitals.

In exchange for the veteran forward, the Penguins received two draft picks: a fifth-round pick in 2025 and a third-round pick in 2027.

Eller returns to the Capitals, where he played from 2016 to 2023 and won the Stanley Cup in 2018. He scored 87 goals and 208 points over eight seasons with the club before being traded to the Colorado Avalanche in March 2023.

As a free agent in July 2023, Eller came to Pittsburgh on a two-year deal worth $4.9 million.

The 35-year-old from Rodovre, Denmark, was the St. Louis Blues’ first-round pick (13th overall) in 2007. In 1,053 games, Eller has scored 182 goals and 409 points.
