32 animals removed from Berks home

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County took in 32 animals Wednesday after its department of animal protection responded for a wellness check to a home in Womelsdorf for an undetermined number of animals.

“During the visit supported by Womelsdorf Police Department and the codes office, a total of 22 dogs, three cats, five snakes and two geckos were removed from a residence to be condemned,” the ARL said in a statement released Thursday. “The animals are currently being checked by the ARL’s medical team to assess their condition but all appear to be in good body condition.”

Womelsdorf police could not be reached for comment.

Glenn Bertolet of Kraft Municipal Group, the third-party code enforcement business contracted by Womelsdorf, said he could not comment about when the residence was condemned by the borough nor the conditions he observed while there Wednesday.

He did say, per borough zoning ordinance, that a maximum total of six animals — dogs or cats — may be kept at a Womelsdorf residence.

The ARL said the investigation is still open.

The ARL said it is at capacity for cats and dogs and is seeking foster homes to take in the newly acquired animals. Go to https://berksarl.org/foster/ to sign up to become a foster home or existing foster families can send an email to [email protected].

Volunteers and donations are also being sought.

“If you have time in your day to assist with laundry, cleaning, food preparation, or any other support task for the next few weeks, please fill out a volunteer application at https://berksarl.org/volunteer/ or email [email protected] if you are already an active volunteer,” the ARL stated.

They are also seeking monetary donations to cover vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, food and housing. Contact [email protected] for additional information.

Adopters of current animals in the ARL’s shelter and foster homes are also being sought. All adult dogs and cats are free to adopt through Oct. 15 as part of a Bissell Pet Foundation event. Visit https://berksarl.org/pets/ to see which animals are available.
