The exhibition, which continues until October 15, enjoys wide participation from the Libyan regions, as well as delegations from neighboring countries.
The exhibition highlights the economic importance of dates, given that… Libya Home to more than 10 million palm trees, its annual production is estimated at about 180,000 tons, with about 50,000 tons exported according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture. It is also seen as the second largest source of foreign currency after Oil.
The presence of the Arab Union of Date Producers and Manufacturers, affiliated with the League of Arab States, at the exhibition was notable, as well as a number of companies specialized in industries associated with dates from Egypt, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania, which received remarkable acceptance from visitors to the exhibition during the first days of its opening.
A number of residents of Gallo drew attention to highlight the importance of the date sector in supporting the Libyan economy, considering that these exhibitions represent a golden opportunity to promote Libyan products in global markets, which will increase national income.
Secretary of the Arab Union of Date Producers and Manufacturers of the League of Arab States, Ashraf Al-Far, pointed out that with the current annual production in Libya, it has great potential and capabilities in this field, as it is possible to produce approximately 500 thousand tons annually, with increasing interest in this important sector.
Al-Far explained in statements to Sky News Arabia that dates are a “national and strategic” product for the Libyan state, and occupy an important place in its sources of national income. Therefore, the importance of such exhibitions comes with the aim of enhancing the status of Libyan dates locally and regionally, which contributes to Increasing national income second only to oil, in addition to providing this sector with thousands of job opportunities.
According to the Secretary General of Date Producers, the city of “Jalo” is one of the most famous and most important Libyan cities in terms of date production, given the presence of two million palm trees there, and it contains some of the finest types of dates, such as “Deglet Nour” dates, which reflects the quality of agricultural production in the Libyan oases.
Palm cultivation in Libya is mainly concentrated in the oases and Jufra regions located in the east and southeast of the country, especially in the cities of Hun, Wodan and Sukna.
These regions produce more than 400 varieties of dates, including famous varieties such as “Degla,” “Saidi,” “Halima dates,” “Majhoul,” “Aleeq,” and “Nawayat Mecca.”
