Consultation opened into plan for new traveller site in Garlinge near Margate

Plans for a traveller site have been revealed as a public consultation launches to discuss the proposals.

The small camp in Garlinge would include up to eight caravans, eight vehicles and four utility blocks.

If given the go-ahead, the families would be housed on a field between Shottendane Road and Caxton Road.

The consultation will run for 10 weeks and neighbours as well as Traveller Coalition and Gypsy Council will be contacted directly.

Thanet District Council says it needs to supply seven permanent pitches and five transit pitches to meet its statutory duty to consider the housing, accommodation and site needs of all sections of the community.

Dependent on this first stage, the council will submit a planning application for the scheme.

Anyone wishing to comment has until 5pm on December 17, and comments can be made via an online survey.

The consultation document states: “Gypsy and traveller families have a long history of visiting and staying in Thanet.

“They have developed long-standing links to local communities.

“All local councils have a statutory duty to assess the accommodation needs of gypsy and traveller families in their area.

“They must ensure that suitable accommodation is available.”

In October last year, a group of travellers were ordered to leave Ramsgate port by the council.

Despite previous legal proceedings and welfare concerns determining they could stay put, Thanet District Council made further inquiries and withdrew its consent.
