BBC Weather app ‘glitch’ as hurricane winds forecast across Kent

The BBC says it is working to fix a “glitch” in its weather app after it mistakenly reported hurricane winds were forecast for Kent.

The site is showing estimated wind speeds of 9,000mph in Broadstairs and overnight temperatures of 404C in other parts of the country.

But in a post on X, formerly Twitter, BBC Weather has apologised, saying: “You may have noticed some data issues on our app and website.

“We are working hard to fix it quickly. Sorry – please bear with us.”

In another post, presenter Simon King said: “Oops, don’t be alarmed by some of our BBC Weather app data this morning.

“Be assured there won’t be 14408mph winds, hurricane force winds or overnight temperatures of 404C.”

People have taken to social media to share what the app is saying in their towns, with one commenter in Marden saying: “Not sure what’s happening with the BBC weather app but it might be a little breezy today.”

Another said: “Take care everyone, Kingsgate has speeds of 9,009.”

Referring to the famous BBC weather forecast 36 years ago, hours before the Great Storm, another person in Cranbrook said: “Perhaps they’re commemorating the Michael Fish forecast of 15 October 1987.

“Or do they know something we don’t?”

Another person, on Romney Marsh, said it’s “going to be windy today!” before posting a screenshot from their app.
