Cyprus vehicle registrations surge by 13.2% in first 9 months

The total number of registered motor vehicles in Cyprus rose by 13.2 per cent in the January-September 2024 period, reaching 38,819, compared to 34,280 during the same period last year.

According to the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), in September alone, motor vehicle registrations totaled 4,428, a decrease of 3.9 per cent from the 4,607 recorded in September 2023.

Registrations of passenger saloon cars dropped by 7.5 per cent to 3,442 from 3,722 in the corresponding month of the previous year.

For the January-September period, passenger saloon registrations climbed by 10.3 per cent, reaching 30,344, up from 27,499 in 2023. Of these, 12,304, or 40.5 per cent, were new, while 18,040, or 59.5 per cent, were used cars.

Notably, rental car registrations in this category fell by 28.5 per cent to 3,438.

The service also reported a shift in fuel preferences, with gasoline-powered saloon cars decreasing to 49.7 per cent from 59.3 per cent in the same period in 2023, and diesel-powered cars edging down from 10.0 per cent to 9.9 per cent.

Meanwhile, electric car registrations increased from 2.6 per cent to 3.6 per cent, and hybrids rose from 28.1 per cent to 36.7 per cent.

Bus registrations dropped sharply to 119 in January-September 2024, compared to 266 in the same period last year.

Conversely, cargo vehicle registrations surged by 33.6 per cent to 4,311, with light trucks up 37.4 per cent to 3,454, heavy trucks up 26.6 per cent to 504, and road tractors (trailers) increasing by 60.4 per cent to 170, though rental vehicles in this category declined by 12.0 per cent to 183.

Motorcycles under 50cc saw a substantial increase to 603 from 230 in 2023, while those over 50cc rose by 10.6 per cent to 2,933 from 2,651.
