The challenges faced by Cyprus as a frontline state regarding migration flows, along with the need for closer cooperation among EU member states, will be put forth by Cyprus’ Deputy Minister for Migration Nicholas Ioannides, during the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Union, set to take place on Thursday in Luxembourg.
According to a press release from the deputy minister’s office, the Council meeting will focus on key topics such as migration and asylum policies, specifically the EU’s approach to the repatriation of third-country nationals who do not have the right to remain within the EU’s borders.
Ioannides will emphasise the necessity for the effective implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, particularly the protection of external borders and the proper functioning of the solidarity mechanism among member states.
On the sidelines of the Council, Ioannides will also meet with Deputy Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs Beate Gminder,
Ioannides is expected to return to Cyprus on Friday.
