Cooke signs new two-year Glamorgan deal

Glamorgan wicketkeeper-batter Chris Cooke, who made his county debut in 2011, has signed a new two-year deal.

The 38-year-old initially played as a specialist batter but has been first choice behind the stumps since 2017 when he took over from Mark Wallace.

Cooke scored 582 Championship runs in 2024, moving past 7,000 for his career with a century in the win over Gloucestershire in the last match.

“I’m thrilled to play for Glamorgan for another two years, as it’s a really exciting time to be involved with the club,” he said.

“I have a lot more to give on and off the field and I feel that my best cricket is still ahead of me.”

Cooke also remained the first-choice keeper for the T20 Blast.

He was selected for the Welsh Fire Hundred franchise team for the second successive year, but was prevented from playing by injury.

Cooke was born in Johannesburg and played for Western Province before deciding to pursue his career in the UK.

He started as an explosive limited-overs specialist but became a first-choice Glamorgan selection in all forms of the game.

Cooke’s best scores are 205 not out in the Championship, 161 in one-day cricket and 113 not out in the T20 Blast – setting a new record for Glamorgan’s quickest century as he reached three figures off just 38 balls against Middlesex at Northwood in 2023.

Will Smale kept wicket in the One Day Cup in Cooke’s absence, while Alex Horton and Henry Hurle are other wicket-keeping options on the Glamorgan staff as potential future successors for Cooke.
