5.1 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency announced today, Sunday, that an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck the southern coast of the Indonesian island of Java.

The earthquake struck at 4:54 local time (0954 GMT) and was centered 94 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi, West Java province, at a depth of 65 kilometers under the Indian Ocean.

The head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the earthquake did not pose a tsunami risk.

He added that residents in the surrounding areas felt the strength of the earthquake.
There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The agency said it had not detected any aftershocks, but advised residents to stay away from damaged or cracked buildings, and to check homes before re-entering them to ensure the safety of the buildings.
