President Nikos Christodoulides will convene the National Council on Monday ahead of his planned informal dinner with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar on October 15, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Sunday.
Letymbiotis said the meeting will take place at 11am, with Christodoulides set to inform National Council members about his meetings in New York at the UN General Assembly last month, as well as the forthcoming informal dinner.
Additionally, he said, other developments in the region will also be discussed.
He described the developments as “an issue in which the Republic of Cyprus plays a very important humanitarian role, in terms of the repatriation of people from the region to their countries of origin with the activation of the ‘Estia plan’.”
Christodoulides had said earlier on Sunday that the planned date came about as the result of “repeated meetings and efforts”.
“We take advantage of every contact, for Cyprus, of course staying focused on the important things, the big things. I am ready, I know the limits of compromise and our red lines, and I hope the meeting will have positive results,” he said.
Meanwhile, on the matter of regional developments, an outbound flight from Larnaca to Australia was due to depart at around 3pm, taking Australian citizens who had landed in Cyprus from Lebanon on Saturday back to their home country.
A total of 229 Australian citizens had landed in Larnaca from Beirut at 11am on Saturday, while another flight with 179 Australian citizens on board landed at 4pm on the same day.
