Red Corner Benefit supports fight against childhood cancer

A nonprofit organization supporting the fight against childhood cancer will host its 15th annual Red Corner Benefit in Union Township on Saturday, Oct. 19.

“Our goals are to raise awareness of the number of children fighting pediatric cancer and to provide local families battling cancer with extra emotional, as well as financial support,” organizers stated in their announcement of the event. “Each year we hold an annual all-day benefit event with the intent of raising funds to aid these families. It is a group effort of family, friends, local businesses and entire communities.”

Red Corner Benefit is a nonprofit organization focused on supporting local families and their children battling cancer.

“With the hard work of our volunteers, we collect sponsorships, gift certificates, raffle prizes, goods, services and monetary donations which are applied directly to the RCB cause,” organizers said. “Proceeds raised during our annual benefit go directly to the families with the express purpose of alleviating the hardships they incur while caring for their children in treatment.”

This year’s Red Corner Benefit is dedicated to 7-year-old Piper Irias from Coatesville. All proceeds will go directly to Piper and her family.

Diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma in May 2019 at age of 2, Piper faced extensive treatments and long hospital stays. After her treatments she was declared cancer-free, but her cancer returned in October 2022. Since then, Piper has courageously undergone seven more rounds of chemotherapy and is completing her second round of MIBG therapy.

Hosted by Tammy Roehrig and her husband, Kevin McColgan, on their farmland at 465 Red Corner Road near Douglassville, the event features music, food, drinks, activities and bonfires. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. The rain-or-shine event begins at noon and runs until 11 p.m.

“It is an amazing day of family-friendly entertainment at a great price for a great cause! Come out and support Piper!” organizers stated on the event website, https://www.redcornerbenefit.org/.

15 years of raising funds

“Red Corner Benefit is the continuum of a great 15-year tradition that began as a yearly fall road trip from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay area to attend The Bridge School Benefit,” organizers stated on the website.

The Bridge School is a nonprofit organization working to ensure that individuals with severe speech and physical impairments achieve full participation in their communities through the use of augmentative and alternative means of communication. The Bridge School Benefit was founded and has been hosted by musician Neil Young and his wife, Pegi, since its inception in 1986.

“After years of supporting the Bridge School Benefit, and in light of a move back to the East Coast, the idea to form our own Benefit that could be shared with our friends and family came to fruition,” organizers stated on the website.

After reading a newspaper article about local child Kiki Fox battling neuroblastoma, (a rare form of pediatric cancer), the Red Corner Benefit was established.

“Along with being incredibly impacted by Kiki and seeing first hand what these kids and their families go through, the inspiration for the ongoing cause was solidified,” organizers said.

Since 2009 with the first benefit dedicated to Kiara Fox, Red Corner Benefit has been hosted on the third Saturday of every October, consisting of live music, food, drinks, face painting, pumpkin painting, a petting zoo, bonfires, sky lanterns and a donated professional fireworks show. Each year a new child is chosen with the help of previous recipient families, friends and benefit organizers.
