Shelters in Cyprus ready for 30 per cent of population

There are 2,200 shelters across Cyprus ready to accommodate 30 per cent of the population, civil defence spokesman Panayiois Liasides said on Friday, amid reports members of the public have been frantically calling due to fears surrounding the turmoil in the Middle East.

Liasides specified there are efforts to increase the numbers so as to accommodate up to 70 per cent. Talks are underway to establish a list of churches with large basements, which could possibly be used as a shelter.

“There are also a lot of new developments which have underground spaces that could be used as a site for protection.”

Homes that have a basement can be used by its residents for safety, Liasides said.

All 2,200 shelters are immediately available, and most are equipped, have a toilet and water. Those that do not have bathroom facilities will be equipped with bio toilets.

He underlined shelters are for a short stay for as long as bombs and air strikes are ongoing, not for the duration of any conflicts.

Should the public require any information they can contact the civil defence at 22403450 or 22403452. They can share their address and postcode so they can be informed of the closest shelter.

Members of the public should make their way to a shelter if they hear sirens.

Liasides said individuals are encouraged to bring some water and dry food, though their stay there will be temporary. Should the need arise for a longer stay, the civil defence has provisions to make food and water available.
