New Costa Coffee drive-thru in A20 Snargate Street, Dover, to open in mid-November

A town’s fourth Costa Coffee is set to open next month as work on a new drive-thru branch nears completion.

Construction of the shop on A20 Snargate Street, Dover, began in April when former warehouses that once stood on the land were demolished.

The blue buildings were home to a late 20th-century employment unit that had been left in a “relatively dilapidated state”.

As well as the new branch, the disused land – opposite the marina – will accommodate a car park, fitted with electric charging points.

Bosses had initially hoped to have the site open by September, but now hope to launch the store in mid-November.

Plans for the venue were approved by Dover District Council (DDC) in August last year.

But the town already has three Costa stores while there are another two stands within the Port of Dover at the Eastern Docks ferry terminal.

There are shops in the town centre in Biggin Street, a unit of its own in St James’ Retail and Leisure Park with another also at that location inside the Next clothes and homeware store.

Several other businesses, such as garages and supermarkets, sell takeaway cups of the brand’s brew too, including the BP garage just metres away from the new branch.

The unit in St James’ Retail Park is set to move a few doors down as plans for new signage at the old Rico Sabor unit have been approved.

The new cafe in Snargate Street is part of a waterfront regeneration scheme, which also involves the Port of Dover authority’s continuing £250 million Dover Western Docks Revival.

That has included the opening of the Marina Pier and Cargo Terminal West in 2019.
