Fifth Cyprus Forum: highest-level discourse on era’s global, political issues

For another year, Oxygen for Democracy, in collaboration with the Delphi Economic Forum and University of Cyprus, the Fifth Cyprus Forum is being held over October 3-4, 2024 in Nicosia.

More than 200 speakers, including political officials, technocrats, academics, representatives of organisations, research centers, and civil society from Cyprus and abroad, will participate in discussions at the Forum. A total of 64 hours of discussions will take place, covering topics such as Democracy and the Rule of Law, Foreign Policy, Economy, Social Issues, Peacekeeping, Sustainability, and Technology and Innovation. The conference will be held at the Old Nicosia Town Hall and the Ledra Palace Hotel.

During the Forum’s opening ceremony at the Old Nicosia Town Hall, President Nikos Christodoulides hailed the event’s fifth year. “It is with great pleasure that I am participating once again in the Cyprus Forum, which, over the course of its five years of operation, has managed not only to establish itself as an institution but, more importantly, as a high-level gathering that addresses critical and timely issues concerning citizens in Cyprus, Europe, and internationally,” he said.

President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, emphasised the importance of the event in an era of turbulence. “Today, we are going through a period where everything is being questioned, including democratic values themselves,” she noted. “Our response must be to further reinforce the democratic and legislative framework, so that we can properly uphold the principles of justice, the rule of law, the legal order, and our own integrity.”

Executive Chairman of the Cyprus Forum, Nikolas Kyriakides, in his address, also framed the conference within a context of global challenges. “In a world facing geopolitical tensions, social inequalities, and escalating uncertainty, the need for strong, fair, and transparent institutions has never been more urgent,” he said. “These institutions serve as the foundation upon which societies that promote peace and prosperity for all can be built. UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 calls on us to strengthen our institutions, ensure equal access to justice, and work towards more peaceful societies.”

The Fifth Cyprus Forum is once again collaborating closely this year with scientific partners (knowledge partners) from Cyprus and abroad, including the European Policy Centre, ELIAMEP, the Cyprus Economic Society, the Atlantic Council, the Cyprus Centre for European and International Affairs, the PRIO Cyprus Centre, the Eastern Mediterranean Project at Oxford, the World Bank, the EU Tax Observatory, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, and others, who have shaped the content of the conference.
