A popular fireworks display at a 17th century countryside pub has become the latest Bonfire Night event in the county to be cancelled.
Bosses of the Farriers Arms in Mersham near Ashford say they have no choice but to abandon this year’s extravaganza due to financial struggles.
The gala was expected to draw in hundreds of guests to the historic inn with fireworks, food and music.
However, publicans John Hockley, 37, and Lindsey Best, 41, insist the event would have proven too much for the business financially had it gone ahead.
They said: “It is with an extremely heavy heart that we have made the difficult decision to not go ahead with the annual Farriers Firework display for 2024.
“With immensely rising costs, and a turbulent financial year, we sadly are unable to put this event on.
“We have been so grateful to all who have supported The Farriers Firework event in previous years, and we do hope it will be viable to put on this event in the future.
“We do know how it is loved and enjoyed by so many families and people who return year after year as their tradition.
“Our little pub is still a haven of activity and we have plenty of smaller events and fun planned so please do support us in any way you can – we truly are thankful and appreciate all of our customers.
“Many thanks for your understanding and we are sorry to disappoint so many with this message.”
The watering hole, which was on the verge of closure in 2009 until a group of villagers campaigned to keep it trading, first opened back in 1606.
And following the pub’s latest announcement, some of its regular punters have again rushed to support it following the decision to cancel this year’s display.
Speaking online, Angela Collins said: “Memories of 2022 and 2023 will always stay with us – best display and atmosphere.
“Thank you for your hard work put into this amazing event.”
Louise Morgan added: “Such a shame – we’ve always enjoyed this fantastic event. Totally understand your decision.”
Meanwhile, Hamstreet Fireworks will also not go ahead this year.
Run by Hamstreet & District Sports and Leisure Association (HDSLA), the annual event was planned for its usual spot at the village’s sports pavilion.
But a committee member confirmed to KentOnline the event is off this year and they are working on a plan to ensure its return in 2025.
Both cancellations come just weeks after Gravesham council decided to call off the town’s annual fireworks display when a new sponsor failed to come forward.
Villagers in Eynsford will also not be able to see their area’s own event due to “unforeseen circumstances” stopping it from going ahead this year.
This was alongside Doddington Fireworks Display at Palace Farm, near Faversham, being scrapped in June after 35 years of lighting up the town’s skies.
