Yesterday, the acting United Nations relief official allocated $10 million in emergency funding for the humanitarian situation in Lebanon, which the United Nations local coordinator described as “catastrophic.”
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that Israeli air strikes continue to affect civilians and civilian infrastructure for the fifth consecutive day of large-scale military escalation.
The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, Imran Reda, described the destruction as catastrophic, noting that the escalation of violence had spread to areas that had not been affected by it before, causing widespread destruction.
Reda said: “We are witnessing the bloodiest period in Lebanon in a generation, and many are expressing their fear that this is just the beginning.”
He said that in less than a week, at least 700 people have died, thousands have been injured, and nearly 120,000 people have been displaced, with the numbers continuing to rise.
Since the beginning of the conflict on October 7, 2023, more than 1,500 civilians have been killed, and more than 200,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.
OCHA explained that “the United Nations and its partners are coordinating closely with the Lebanese government to support response efforts,” noting that “food, mattresses, hygiene supplies, and emergency medical supplies” are being provided.
